What Extended Producer Responsibility actually requires from electronics producers, importers and brand owners under India's e-waste rules.

Understanding EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) Rules for Electronics in India

What EPR means in practice

Extended Producer Responsibility puts the responsibility for a product's end-of-life disposal on the company that put it on the market — not just the consumer or the local municipality. Under India's E-Waste (Management) Rules, producers, importers and brand owners of electrical and electronic equipment are required to collect and recycle a defined quantity of e-waste each year, roughly tied to what they sold.

What producers actually need to do

In practice, this means registering with the Central Pollution Control Board, setting up or contracting a collection mechanism, and recycling e-waste through registered recyclers and dismantlers. Producers need to track and report their EPR targets annually, which means keeping documentation of exactly how much was collected and where it went.

This is where a lot of the administrative burden sits — not the recycling itself, but proving it happened, in the format regulators expect.

Where a recycling partner fits in

Most producers don't run their own collection and recycling operations — they work with a certified partner who handles collection drives, doorstep pickup coordination, and recycling, and provides the documentation needed for EPR filing. The value of a good partner here isn't just the recycling itself, but paperwork that's actually usable when it's time to report.
