A plain-language guide to which e-waste and EPR obligations actually apply to small businesses and startups in India, and which don't.

E-Waste Rules for Startups and SMEs in India: A Simple Guide

Not every obligation applies to every business

A lot of small businesses assume e-waste compliance is only a 'big company problem,' and end up either ignoring it entirely or overcorrecting and worrying about obligations that don't actually apply to them. The honest answer depends on what your business does: a company that manufactures, imports or brands electronics has EPR obligations under the rules; a company that simply uses electronics in its own office — laptops, routers, printers — mainly needs to dispose of them responsibly, without the same filing requirements.

Knowing which category you fall into is the first and most useful step.

What a small office actually needs to do

If you're a startup or SME using standard office electronics, the practical requirement is straightforward: don't throw old hardware in general waste, don't sell it to an unregistered scrap buyer, and keep basic records (a pickup receipt or certificate) of how it was disposed of. That's usually enough to cover you if anyone ever asks how your old equipment was handled.

This gets simpler, not harder, as the business grows — the habit of using a certified collector from day one just continues at a larger scale later.

If you do have EPR obligations

If your business brands, imports or manufactures electronics — even at a small scale — you likely need to register under the EPR framework and meet collection targets each year. This is worth sorting out early, since retroactively fixing years of missed filings is a lot more work than registering correctly from the start.

We work with startups and SMEs on both sides of this — simple office disposal, and full EPR registration and target tracking for those who need it.
