What businesses need to know about India's e-waste management rules, without wading through the full regulatory text.
India's E-Waste (Management) Rules apply to a wide range of parties — manufacturers, producers, importers, and bulk consumers of electrical and electronic equipment. If your business sells electronics, imports them, or simply generates a meaningful volume of e-waste as part of operating (a large office IT refresh, for instance), some part of these rules likely applies to you.
The core requirement is that e-waste is collected and channeled to registered dismantlers and recyclers rather than informal handlers, and that producers meet EPR targets tied to what they place on the market. Bulk consumers — which can include large offices — are expected to hand over e-waste only to authorised recyclers or take-back systems, and to keep records of having done so.
For most businesses, compliance is less about interpreting the regulation directly and more about choosing recycling partners who are already positioned to meet it — meaning they can provide the documentation trail (weight, category, destination) that demonstrates compliant disposal if it's ever asked for.
